“In my first book, Nutterville…and Other True Stories of Coping with Mental Illness, I said, “I may never feel I can tell more about the 31 years I lived with my ex-husband.” Unlike most novels, Prisoner of God is based on that true story; I am Doris. Casting myself as a fictional character eneabled me to distance myself from the horror of the last years of my marriage. Names and places have been changed to protect the innocent. Mental illness is a serious problem, affecting many families across America. This story describes what the experience was like for me.”
